cell coverage: eggs

Please disregard the monstrous eyesore in the upper right hand corner of my latest cell phone find.

Okay, so maybe it wasn’t my find (it was my friend Ginger’s!), but I was still impressed by it, nonetheless. Not because it looks completely three-dimensional, like you could run your hand across the cover and actually expect to pick up an egg. Not because it reminded me of my friend Stephanie’s farm eggs, and made me kinda hungry. I was impressed by the fact that this cover had no title. No type. Just Spinelli’s name. And eggs.

I was a little floored. I don’t think I’ve ever seen a cover without a title. Ever. But I’ve only picked up reading again in the past few years (and therefore recently developed my affinity for cover art). Perhaps there’ve been a handful of other covers out there in the wild that are also title-less?

Have you run across any similar covers? If so, please do share!

  1. Yay for the Eggs cover! As I told you in the bookstore, I’d be curious to know of other book covers out there without the title on them. I find this one to be strikingly brilliant! Not sure others could pull it off though? I mean the book title would have to be pretty self explanatory, lol.

  2. Lauren Myracle’s book “Peace Love and Baby Ducks” doesn’t have a title on the front (well, not REALLY. You have to read the pictures.) I’ve seen a few others that came after her with similar cover designs, but I can’t think of them off the top of my head.

I don’t think I like it, at least not in most cases. It makes me feel a little frustrated when I find these books in the wild without previously knowing about them. Like, I have this fear that I’m not smart enough to guess the title, or like the author is trying to play games with me. Is that weird?

    • A trend in Spinelli books with no titles? Interesting! And yeah, I see how someone might think it was a cook book. That’s what Hubs thought when I first showed him the photo.

  3. I love this cover! I’m very consistent with my cover preferences and I like simple, striking images. “Eggs” is awesome. I also love “Stargirl”‘s cover (and the sequel, “Love, Stargirl”) because it’s so simple. I’m ambivalent on the no-title issue: this one might have frustrated me, but I really liked “Stargirl”s (though that may have been because I knew the title before I ever saw the book in real life). I’ve never heard of “Eggs” but I do love Jerry Spinelli so I might have to check it out.

    • I do love both the Stargirl covers, too (and the embossing!). But I do wonder about the folks who’ve never read any of Spinelli’s work or who aren’t familiar with the title…

  4. That’s so funny that you posted this. I picked this book up from the library a few weeks ago just because of the cover. I think someone else mentioned this, but I had previously read STARGIRL and when I saw EGGS I recognized it as a Spinelli book.

  5. Leave it to Ginger to find something awesome lol I’ve never seen a book without a title either. I also didn’t notice that THIS book was title-less until you said something. I guess that means I’m more of an “ohh, it’s pretty” kind of girl 🙂

  6. *Sorry, let me try those links again!)*

Love it. Gollancz (the sci-fi arm of Orion Books) released a set of Future Classics last year with incredible graphic-only covers – no title or author name anywhere: go here for a blog post about it, and you can see the others at the Book Cover Archive.

There was also that beautiful UK re-issue of George Orwell’s 1984. I think they did a few others as well?

  7. DUDE how dense am I for looking at this cover and spending a few minutes trying to figure out why i couldn’t find the title. This is a genuis idea! I love it!! but it sure hurt my head for a while just then.

  8. You should check out Raymond Swanland’s cover art. He has done some amazing work. I would love to see an interview with him!!

    Here’s his site: http://www.raymondswanland.com/Pages/Title01.html

He did the ebook cover for the last book in the Eye of the World series: http://inklingsread.blogspot.com/2011/03/front-cover-friday-towers-of-midnight.html

Anyway.. definitely some great stuff you should check out!

  9. ooooh, I don’t think I’ve ever seen a book with no title, not that I can remember. This one has a great cover too, I do feel like picking up one of those eggs, it looks like you actually could. Awesome cover!
